Best Tips For Oily Skin:
1. Don’t Over Wash Your Face
This is a tip that not many articles online share because there’s a misconception out there that if you have oily skin, you need to wash your face a million and one times a day.
That couldn’t be further from the truth.
Regardless of your skin type, I’d recommend washing your face 1-2 minimum a day. For us oily skin peeps, I’d suggest washing your face 2-3 times a day. I personally wash my face in the morning, after I come home, and before I go to bed!
2. Wash Your Face After Spending Time Outdoors & Exercising
This is a big one. The outdoors and exercise can cause production of oil that can clog your skin. On top of that, it’s important to wash your face well if you live in a hot and/or humid climate (I can check yes for both).
So, if you find yourself regularly outdoors and/or exercising, be sure to wash your face with a good quality cleanser once you’re home (one of my favorites is recommended later in the post)!
3. Use Oil Free & Non-Comedogenic Products
It’s not just how often you use your skincare products, it’s the type of products you’re using. Nowadays, thoughtful and efficient products are available on the market easily that are targeted to help your oily skin. One sure way to determine whether a product is good for oily skin is to see if it is oil free and non-comedogenic. A decent amount of products will explicitly state this on their packaging mainly as a marketing tactic to market to those with oily skin.
So why is it important? Oil free products are important to make sure your pores aren’t clogged (your skin doesn’t need any more oil). And as for non-comedogenic products, these products don’t clog the pores, which is a must for people with oily skin!
4. Choose Lightweight Products
This tip is a must, especially for those of you who live in hot/humid climates! The last thing oily skin needs is products that smother the skin and clog its pores while producing even more oil. It’s a vicious cycle that can be difficult to get out of, so I recommend only going for lightweight and airy products (especially for cleansers and moisturizers) that allow your skin to breathe!
5. Exfoliate Your Skin
Exfoliation has been a game changer for me in not just reducing my skin’s oil production but also evening my skin tone. Regular exfoliation can help control your skin’s oil production while also giving you amazing extra benefits like evened skin tone and texture (my favorite exfoliant is linked later on in the post)!
6. Still Use A Moisturizing Product
This is another tip I knew I needed to add to combat the common misconception that people with oily skin don’t need to moisturize. Absolutely 100% wrong. Let me take you through one of the most vicious skincare cycles out there: when oily skin is deprived of moisture found in moisturizer, it believes it’s dry, therefore overcompensating with increased oil production, which then leads to clogged pores and breakouts.
Not the most fun.
That is why it is oh so important to find a lightweight but still hydrating moisturizer that works for your skin!
7. Use Powder Throughout The Day To Mattify Your Skin
This is a practice I’ve started doing recently and I’ve noticed a significant change in my skin because of it. To help maintain your oily skin throughout the day while also being environmentally friendly (no thank you to blotting paper), use a mattifying powder to touch up your face throughout the day.
PRO TIP: use a powder with SPF in it to also reapply your sunscreen!
8. Don’t Strip Your Skin
This is a must: stripping your skin of its natural moisture will only lead to even more oil being produced (trust me, it’s not fun). One way to avoid stripping your skin is to stay clear of foaming cleansers: while they’re highly satisfying to apply and leave your skin more matte than ever, in the long-term they strip your skin and lead to increased oil production.
9. Less Is More When It Comes To Your Routine
I thought this would be the perfect tip to give before I shared the perfect skincare routine for oily skin. Trust me, less is more when it comes to a good skincare routine for oily skin!
Only choose products that are good quality and that actually help your skin…it’ll pay off in the long run 🙂
Skincare Routine For Oily Skin:
What you’ve been waiting for…the ultimate skincare routine for oily skin!! If you need some routine inspo and/or killer product recommendations, keep reading below! 🙂
1. Mask
While this step isn’t 100% necessary, if you’re looking for a treatment to incorporate some self-care into your routine, this step is for you. For oily skin, a clay mask is the way to go! It’ll help clarify and clean out your pores and with the right product, your skin won’t be stripped in the process.
That’s why I love this Honest Beauty mask which combats oily skin but also uses glycerin to hydrate and protect your skin!

2. Cleanser
Since a cleanser is a wash-off treatment, I truly believe you can suffice with a drugstore pick. That’s why I gravitate to affordable cleansers that still cleanse my skin without stripping it.
That’s also why I love the Aveeno cleanser formulated with oat which helps to clean and soothe your skin at the same time!

3. Exfoliant
This is one of the most important steps in your routine: exfoliation helps to unclog your pores and reveal a fresh, healthy skin barrier. Exfoliation also helps even your skin’s tone and texture!
My top exfoliator is the cult-favorite Paula’s Choice product formulated with BHA (beta hydroxy acid) to help exfoliate your skin. A little goes a long way with this product, and to be more eco-friendly, apply this product with your hands instead of a cotton round (just be sure to moisturize your hands consistently)!!

4. Moisturizer
This is another insanely important step in your routine that you absolutely cannot miss! If you don’t feel like doing your routine after coming home late at night, just be sure to cleanse and moisturize no matter what!
Moisturizer is super important for oily skin because it makes sure that your skin doesn’t become dehydrated and overproduce oil. That’s why I recommend going for a hydrogel cream (a lightweight moisturizer mainly based off of water: perfect for oily skin) to hydrate your skin 🙂

5. SPF
Trust me…SPF is sooooooooo important!!! Whether you’re protecting your skin from harmful UV rays and/or sunburn, sunscreen is an essential whenever you leave the house or are exposed to direct sunlight (which can still happen inside).
That’s why so many people love the Supergoop! Unseen sunscreen: it not just offers insanely good sun protection but also doesn’t have a white cast, which makes it suitable for people of all skin tones!
