If you struggle with balancing your self-confidence and skin, this post is for you.
Struggling with acne, rosacea, or other types of skin issues can be an ordeal, one that tends to have an impact on our self-confidence if we don’t have the right mindset. I know that I’ve struggled to have a positive and loving mindset these past couple of years while struggling with my skin.
And that’s exactly why I wanted to write this blog post.
Today I’m going to share my skin journey and the lessons I’ve learned from it, and how they can help you too. I’m also going to share some tips and advice that I wish I had when I first started struggling with my skin.
If this sounds like something you’d like to learn about, keep reading! (P.S. If you’d like to see The Anagha Edit content on Pinterest, be sure to follow us!)
Self-Confidence And Skin:
First of all, what is self-confidence? And why is it so so important?
Self-confidence is having confidence in yourself. Pretty self-explanatory, I know? But it’s not just being confident in yourself. It’s about trusting in yourself, believing in yourself and your abilities, and believing that you deserve good things. Self-confidence is not arrogance. Rather, it’s a quiet understanding and self-awareness about your strengths and weaknesses.
At the end of the day, self-confidence shows (in a positive way, trust me)! And it’s a direct contributor to self-esteem (another super important thing to possess). Both of these things translate outwards and having them is such a positive addition to your life.
But it’s easier said than done. For many people, being confident does not come naturally. Trust me, I can relate. Self-esteem issues can be crippling, especially when it comes to your physical appearance. And since I’m a beauty, lifestyle, and health writer, I wanted to focus on the implications being insecure about your skin can have.
The Unfortunate Reality About Skin Insecurity:
It’s been almost 5 years since I started struggling with acne and the skin issues that come along with it (hyperpigmentation, rough skin texture, etc.). While the journey has had its ups and downs, the toll it took on my self-esteem is unmistakable. And if you go online, there are so many people who struggle with their skin who will agree with me. Because our skin is our armor, the first thing people see when they meet us, many people who struggle with their skin (including me) feel insecure when there’s any imperfections or blemishes.
Being insecure about your skin can be long-lasting if not dealt with. Even though it’s been five years, I still remember the first couple months of my skin journey clear as day, hopelessly trying to clear my skin and resorting to makeup when my novice skincare guru within me was unsuccessful.
Insecurities hurt, but they don’t have to hurt as much (or at all) if we do the work to make it happen! I’m going to share some much-needed words that I know I needed to read 5 years ago.
1. No One Is Noticing Your Skin The Way You Do
Trust me, they really aren’t. And even if they notice your acne, the majority of people don’t notice it in a negative way. We’re all in our own heads about our own insecurities and problems, and that leaves little mental space to focus on other people’s “flaws” (I say this in quotations because one person’s perceived “flaw” can often be another person’s desire).
2. Blemishes Don’t Make You Ugly; You’re Beautiful!
Read this section title again and again and again until you start to believe it: you are beautiful and amazing no matter the state of your skin! Any type of skin concern doesn’t make you ugly; it makes you human.
I think with the rise of social media filters then with the rise of being “real” on the Internet, unrealistic skin standards have been set. No human can have perfect, flawless skin at all points in time; it’s just not possible.
Just remember that a blemish or skin flareup here and there doesn’t detract from your beauty and value! <3
3. The State Of Your Skin Doesn’t Define Your Or Control You
And finally, the state of your skin doesn’t define you or control you. I cannot stress the importance of this tip enough. Often times, we let our insecurities hold us back. If that’s you, I truly believe you can do the work to move past letting your insecurities holding you back.
Whatever that looks like for you, it’s okay! Do what you gotta do to be okay and happy with you 🙂
Some Extra Thoughts:
After doing the work to really believe and absorb the truths above (you have to really believe in these words to overcome your insecurities), I hope that your life improves in some way!
I know that for me personally, this journey hasn’t been a straightforward one (journeys usually aren’t), so just know that there are going to be good days and possibly bad ones. It’s just about knowing the bad ones will pass and there’s light at the end of every tunnel.
Before I go, I’m going to share some quick skincare tips to start off or supplement your journey with:
- double cleanse your skin in the night: it helps get all the dirt and grime from the day off!
- find a good moisturizer for your skin type: this is such an important part of your routine!
- avoid harsh ingredients like fragrance in your skincare routine: it could irritate your skin!
- target one skin concern at a time so your skin doesn’t get overloaded.
- do your research online to find good products for you; I know a really good blog for this 😉
- see a dermatologist if you need to and are able to: it’ll be okay no matter what! <3
At the end of the day, I wish you the best of luck in your skin journey, and if you’re still reading, thank you so much for sticking around! This was one of my absolute favorite posts to write and I hope you enjoyed reading it. 🙂
Until next time,
