What is Pediatrics:
Pediatrics is the medical specialty which deals with the general health of children, from birth to adulthood. However, many people keep seeing their pediatrician until they’re 21!
The Education & Traits They Need:
Like all doctors, becoming a pediatrician is a long and grueling journey. However, compared to some other specialties, pediatrics doesn’t require a fellowship, which makes your journey a little shorter. Listed below are the educational requirements to become a pediatrician!
- Bachelor’s degree: this takes 3-4 years and will give you the foundation needed for medical school.
- Medical school: this 4-year program provides the knowledge to become a medical doctor.
- 3-year residency: in residency, you will gain hands-on experience with pediatrics.
- Licensing and certification: after a series of exams, you will finally be able to practice as a full-fledged pediatrician!
However, a good pediatrician needs to have more than just a good education; they also need certain character traits! Things I think would make someone a good pediatrician is if they’re good with kids and have good communication skills, both with children and adults.
A Day in the Life of a Pediatrician:
I love a good day in the life, so below is a sample of what it’s like in the day of a pediatrician!
- 9AM: start the workday!
- Throughout the workday, pediatricians see patients, diagnose illnesses, prescribe and order medications, and counsel families on health matters. Depending on what type of institution the pediatrician works at (private practice or hospital), their schedule can also include being on call.
- 5PM: end of the workday!
Let’s Talk $$$:
While becoming a doctor is a very noble task, money does play a part for many aspiring healthcare professionals (and there’s nothing wrong with this)! Pediatricians make a decent chunk of change: according to ZipRecruiter, the national average for a pediatrician’s salary is $192,507.
I know, right?
Obviously depending on how much experience someone has, the quality of their education, and where they’re employed factor into a pediatrician’s salary. But, at the end of the day, pediatricians do get compensated well for their hard work.
Closing Thoughts:
All in all, I believe pediatrics to be a very rewarding medical specialty. If you like kids and want to pursue medicine, this specialty may be the one for you! I hope this blog post gave you more information about pediatrics and thank you for reading!
