Why Mental Health Is So Important:
Mental health has such a big impact on multiple parts of our lives, including our general wellness and how we cope with things. Being mentally healthy seriously improves overall quality of life by providing stability and peace to our lives.
I know for me personally that having good mental health makes me feel better about myself and my life, manifesting in the state of my body! Because the health of our minds is so intertwined with the health of our bodies, it’s so important to take care of both.
Thankfully, in the past couple of years, there have been amazing strides towards destigmatizing mental health issues and online communities are some great ways for people to find safe spaces to find information and connect with others.
And that’s what I hope to contribute to today, as I share my top tips to improve overall mental health and hopefully give you some helpful information/inspiration to take charge of your mental wellness journey!
And last, but definitely not least, I just want you to know that you are more than the state of your mind. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and I hope you’ve found it or are on your way there. I’m proud of you for continuing to push forward: you deserve the best! <3
How To Improve Your Mental Wellness:
1. Identify Your Issues
This is probably the hardest tip to follow in this entire list, because it can be really scary to do this. But identifying the problem is the first step to tackling your mental health issues and will take some self-reflection.
A lot of times, we know that there’s a problem but are too scared to acknowledge it, or give it thought. This is often because we feel that the problem will go away if we ignore it.
But unfortunately, that’s not how mental wellness issues work: in fact, ignoring your problems ends up making them worse, and I’d never want that for you. That’s why I recommend sitting with yourself and truly identifying what mentally ails you (this way you can create a plan to hopefully improve your mental health)!
2. Document Your Feelings
The next step in this process is to document your feelings, and this can be done through journaling. I used to be skeptical of this practice, but after consistently doing it for a couple months, I found that I genuinely felt more in control of my day when I journaled.
While you can get a journal with prompts, even a simple notebook will do the trick. The goal of this is to create a way for you to actualize your thoughts and feelings somehow. This is important because it helps make sure you don’t bottle up all your negative feelings. This tip is also perfect for people who don’t necessarily feel comfortable talking about their mental health with others (trust me, I get it)!
3. Practice Self-Care
This can be another tip that’s hard to follow up with on the daily. While we all have an image of self-care in our brains that usually includes face masks and bubble baths, self-care can mean something different to everyone.
For me, self-care includes going outside, washing my hair, and doing something I love like my skincare routine. Taking care of yourself can include pampering, but it’s also the essential things that we do regularly like showering and brushing our teeth.
Even one small act of self-care everyday that you truly enjoy can make all the difference!
4. Move Your Body
With this tip, I don’t necessarily mean hardcore exercise. Whether it be a workout at the gym or a stretch in the morning, moving your body is a great thing for your physical health, hormones, strength, and clarity.
Because of how intertwined physical health and mental health are, physical activity is a great way to be present in the moment and improve your mental wellbeing.
5. Nourish Your Body
This is another tip that draws upon connections between physical wellness and mental wellness. Nourishing your body with the right types of food can improve your physical health as well as your mental health (strength, clear-mindedness, and more)!
While this can be hard to achieve, just remember that life’s all about balance and as long as you lead a generally healthy lifestyle, you will feel the difference mentally.
6. Meet Other People That You Actually Want To Meet
They say that humans are social beings, and even if you identify as a hardcore introvert, social interactions can revive us. I know that when I meet people in my life who are truly my well-wishers and positively impact my life, I feel rejuvenated and more present in my daily life.
And that’s why I included the “that you actually want to meet” in the title of this section: with social interaction, I stick to my “quality over quantity” rule. Trust me, it’s better to have fewer social interactions which uplift you than many interactions which bring you down.
7. Pursue Things That Make You Happy
This is something which can really improve the quality of your life and mental wellbeing. Even if it’s once a week, pursuing a passion of yours that gives your life extra meaning and intention is always a good thing!
For me, that’s playing the piano (and writing these blog posts lol), but it can basically anything. As long as it truly makes you happy, I highly recommend pursuing some sort of hobby which makes you happy!
8. Find A Daily Purpose
This tip is a big one: finding a daily purpose can seriously benefit your mental health. And while that purpose may change everyday or be relatively small, having some goal or agenda for the day can give your life some meaning, especially when you’re struggling.
When going through mental health issues, I always recommend celebrating the small successes along the way. While the path is far from linear, it’s one that can be made a bit easier by appreciating the progress you’re making and finding purpose in it all!
9. Seek Professional Help
At the end of the day, sometimes life throws things at us that we may need extra help processing and getting through. So, if you feel like you need/want it and are able to afford it, don’t be afraid to seek professional mental help. You are not lesser than for choosing to go to therapy and you deserve to take care of yourself in all aspects of life, especially mentally! <3
