Know What You’re Getting Into
Getting a medical degree is no joke. It takes serious hard work, dedication, and time to become a medical professional. Make sure that you are prepared to do the work it takes to complete a degree in medicine because it could take years for you to actually see some decent money.
2. Make Sure You Are Passionate About What You Are Studying
This is a big one.
There’s no point in going to school for years and years if at the end of the day, you don’t like what you are doing. That’s why it is so important to do proper research and actually find out if you want to pursue a medical profession and if so what job within the medical world you want.

3. Stay Organized
Staying organized while in school is the only way you’ll succeed. It is super important to keep all of your homework and papers organized in notebooks, folders, and binders.
You can even keep your notes on your computer if that’s easier for you. Just keeping your papers in your bag is a surefire way to lose them!
4. Have A Planner
One super easy way to stay organized is to have a planner. Whether you prefer time-blocking or to-do lists, there’s a planner out there that’ll meet your needs.
I personally am eyeing the By Sophia Lee College Planner….seriously, it looks so good! It has sections for specifically school/college stuff as well as to-do lists and time-blocking sections.
5. Have A Study Buddy
If you struggle with motivating yourself to get stuff done, then having a study buddy will really help you. One thing I recommend with having a study buddy is for your buddy to not be your BFF. I’ve tried this before and I found that we would just talk but not really get any work done.
Instead, find someone in your class who you jive with and become their study buddy! This way you can stay on task but also possibly make a new friend 🙂
6. Make a Schedule
I thrive on a schedule and if you’re anything like me, this tip will really benefit you.
Like I mentioned in tip #4, you can manage your schedule through a physical planner, or you can use systems like Notion and Google Calendar.
7. Have Self-Care Days
Self-care is one of the most important things to do to take care of your mental health. Make sure to carve out a day whenever you can to do all the self-care things!
Examples of Self-Care:
- facial
- mani-pedi
- hike through nature
- meditation
- reading
- yoga/exercise

8. Take Breaks
This is more of a daily self-care act that you can incorporate while getting a medical degree: TAKE BREAKS. I know that I personally feel super guilty whenever I take a break from working on my blog or school stuff.
But….breaks are so important because they help your mind rest and get prepared for your next task.
9. Don’t Get Distracted
This is a really tough one. It is crucial that you put your phone and any other devices away so you can study to the best of your abilities.
10. Don’t Be Afraid To Ask Questions
I need to follow this tip lol 😉 The course work for a medicine degree is oftentimes challenging, time-consuming and rigorous. That’s why it’s so important to ask questions when you don’t understand something.
11. Procrastination Is A No-No
I know that some people thrive on putting things off till the very last minute(wish I could relate…actually I don’t :)). I’m the actual opposite of procrastination, and I feel like that’s worked in my favor. When you have an insane workload(which you’ll probably have in med school), it’s important to be on top of things like homework, projects, and assignments.
12. Figure Out Your Preferred Studying Style
Different learning styles work for different people. Whether it be using flashcards, watching videos, or reading explanations, the sooner you figure out what works best for you, the better.
13. Keep The End Goal In Mind
While you’re in the thick of receiving your degree, it’s so important to remember your end goal: so many people quit because sometimes, the work seems impossible to do.
But, I know that if you constantly remind yourself of why you’re getting a medical degree, you’ll be a part of that small percentile that succeeds!
