Makeup Tips For Beginners:
1. Less Is More At First
This tip can really apply to anything you’re trying to learn, but especially for makeup, it’s super easy to be daunted if you try to do everything at once. By taking a less is more approach to becoming a better makeup artist, you won’t back out 🙂
2. Study Your Face To Determine What Makeup Suits You
This is a super important tip that can make or break your makeup game. I know that social media has us all thinking that one type of makeup will suit all of our faces, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. It’s important to know the way your face is structured so you can create makeup looks that actually suit your features!
3. Focus On One Part Of The Face At A Time
This ties back to my “less is more” tip. Don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to become a master at every facet of makeup at once (trust me, it doesn’t work). Work on mastering one part of a makeup look at a time so you can actually become skilled.
For example, I’d focus on perfecting base makeup like contour and foundation before moving on to eyeshadow!
4. Don’t Splurge On Products Until You Think You’re Ready
While it’s so satisfying to keep adding makeup products to your cart, your bank account probably disagrees 😉
I would recommend not spending too much on makeup products in the beginning of your makeup journey: IMO, you don’t need the most premier or expensive makeup products to create amazing makeup looks!
5. First Master The Natural Makeup Look
This is the base look that you can never go wrong with; so if you can master this look, you can then start to move onto other looks! The reason I recommend starting with this look is because it’s generally the easiest one to do.
What Makes Up A Natural Makeup Look:
- very light base makeup (including foundation/tinted moisturizer and concealer, blush, highlight and bronzer/contour)
- shiny eyeshadow
- mascara
- tamed brows (not necessarily filled!)
- lip gloss and/or natural lipstick
- setting spray and/or powder
6. Make Sure You Use The Right Shade
This is a tip I had to learn the hard way (we don’t have to talk about my makeup from 2 years ago) :I. Using the right shade of your makeup products can make or break your makeup look. Your application game could be flawless, but if your foundation is the wrong shade, then no one’s going to care about your amazing makeup technique. All they’ll focus on is how your face and the rest of your body are different colors.
It definitely takes some experimenting, but with trial and error, you can find the perfect shade of not just foundation, but also concealer!
PRO TIP: be sure to choose shades of blush, highlight and contour that complement your skin color and undertones.
7. Use The Cat Eye Concealer Trick
The cat eye concealer trick is used by many models to get that snatched eye look. If this doesn’t suit your face, then use this tip as a reason to experiment with different makeup trends and styles!
For my cat eye lovers though, be sure to apply the concealer at an upward angle to create an amazing snatched eye shape (accentuate with eyeliner if you want to go the extra mile)!
8. Shape Your Brows With Primer/Moisturizer (Or Water)
This tip is for those who don’t want a million and one products crowding up their vanity (me included)! If you have decently thick eyebrows, you can shape them with primer or moisturizer. Just squeeze a tiny amount or use excess from your fingers and shape your brows the way you want. If you’re looking for a quick fix, I generally use some water and it’ll get the job done 🙂
However, if you have thinner brows, I recommend going for a pigmented brow gel to fill in your brows while still maintaining a natural look.
9. Apply Contour In The Hollows Of Your Face
The tips up till now have been mostly to help get you started. But now what do you do? You have all the right products and are ready to jump in. I thought my first actual makeup application tip should apply to one of the most important yet hardest makeup skills to master: contour. For the past couple of years, Instagram stripe-esque contour was all the rage. Recently however, natural contour that accentuates your features instead of making you into someone else has become all the rage (and I’m here for it).
How To Apply Contour The MUA Way:
- feel where the hollows of your cheeks are (right underneath your cheekbones)
- take your contour product and apply it from the edges of your face to the ends of your cheekbones
- blend it out to make it look more natural
- apply contour tracing underneath your jaw for that snatched jaw line
- apply contour (or bronzer!) to the perimeter of your forehead for a small forehead allusion or just some added dimension
10. Apply Highlight To The High Points Of Your Face
Highlight is a product that can look tacky if not applied correctly. I always take a less is more approach to applying highlighter, and I’d apply it on your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, your browbone, and your chin (if that suits your face).
11. Overline Your Lips To Create The Allusion Of Fuller Lips
First things first, when I say overline your lips, I don’t mean like Kylie Jenner ;). If you want to accentuate your lips, slightly overlining them will give that impression.
If you want it to look natural, I’d recommend going for a lipstick/liner duo that matches the color of your lips.
12. Set Your Hard Work With Powder
What’s the point of creating an amazing makeup look if it goes away within two hours? That’s why setting your makeup with powder is so important! Whether you reapply mattifying powder throughout the day or choose to use a specific setting powder, there are so many options on the market now which don’t make your face look cakey (a non negotiable)!
13. Use Sunscreen Powder to Reapply SPF Throughout The Day
This is a holy grail tip that’s not just a makeup tip but also a skincare tip! If you struggle with oily skin and reapply powder throughout the day like I do, use a sunscreen powder to protect your skin!
