Makeup Artist Tips:
1. Practice Practice Practice!
We all know what they say: practice makes perfect. In most cases this holds true, and makeup artistry is no different. The only way to actually improve your makeup skills is by practicing them!
You can practice your makeup skills by doing your makeup in the morning before work or school. Or, try practicing makeup on friends if you want to become a makeup artist.
2. Do Online Research
This is one of the best thing you can do if you want to actually improve your makeup skills. And good thing is: you’ve already started this step by reading this blog post!
Google has the answer to pretty much anything. Through the Internet, you can get an answer to all your makeup artistry questions in the form of video, images, or text. I recommend stalking Google, Pinterest, Instagram, and YouTube for makeup inspo 🙂
3. Invest In Good Quality Products
While this is not a make-or-break step to becoming a good makeup artist, it can certainly help. The better your makeup products are, the better your makeup will turn out. While you do need to know how to do makeup properly for it to turn out good, high quality makeup products can help you throughout the process.
However, you don’t need to splurge on everything.

For example, products like makeup brushes, concealer, and foundation are better to splurge on than mascara (you can find extremely good mascaras for under 5 bucks). You certainly don’t need to splurge on makeup products to become a good makeup artist, but if you want to, makeup brushes, concealer, and foundation are the items I’d spend some bank on 🙂

4. Experiment With The Latest Trends
Â
I love looking at the latest trends in not just fashion but also in makeup. The past couple of years, makeup has become really inspired by the show, Euphoria, and that’s what the image above is inspired by.
A perfect way to practice and become better at makeup is through current makeup trends. As you can see, colorful and glittery eyeshadow with rhinestones is a big trend right now. Try it out and see how it goes! Worst case scenario there’s always makeup remover 😉
5. Start With The Basics
Oftentimes, people get discouraged when they try these super complicated makeup looks and they don’t work out. Well, it’s probably because you don’t know how to do the basics.
Examples of basics include contour, a red lip, and eye liner. I’d suggest perfecting your daily makeup look before moving on to more complicated trends and inspo pictures.
6. Use Reference Photos To Hone Your Skills
Mimicry is the best way to hone your makeup skills. Find a makeup look you like and try to recreate it! Once you get it down, you can put your own spin on it to suit your personal interests!
PRO TIP: if you’re trying a makeup look out for the first time for a big event, attempt doing it in advance so in case it doesn’t go the way you want, you’re not stuck panicking about your makeup the day of!
7. Practice One Type Of Makeup At A Time
This is a big tip for the beginner makeup artist. Don’t go trying to master the perfect cat eye, cut crease, and ultimate contour all at once. To truly master something, put your complete focus on it. For example, don’t start thinking about a cut crease until you master the cat eye (or vice versa)!
This will ensure you don’t get discouraged on your makeup artist journey.
8. Document Your Progress
This isn’t necessarily going to make you a better artist, but it certainly makes things more fun! If you’re looking to become a professional MUA, get yourself a makeup portfolio to house all the looks you’ve done. You can show this to clients and prove your insane skills to them 😉
However, if makeup is just a fun hobby you’re looking to improve, you can start a folder on your phone of makeup looks you’ve done or even start an Instagram account!
9. Take Your Time And Have Fun!
And last but definitely not least…have fun! Makeup, when used the right way, can become a wonderful tool of self-expression, so don’t get too caught up in becoming the “best” MUA.
The minute makeup isn’t fun or casual anymore is the moment you should step back and take a break. Therefore, take as much or as little time as you want and enjoy the process in becoming a better MUA.
Trust me, you’re going to look back on those old photos of your bad makeup and cringe with love <3
