Basic Makeup Tutorial:
Before starting, I just want to say that if there are parts of this makeup routine that you don’t really want to include, you don’t have to! Makeup is such a personal story, so feel free to adapt this tutorial however you wish! I still hope this serves as a baseline tutorial for your makeup needs! Let’s get startedddd 🙂
1. Apply Primer To Problem Areas Of Your Face
This is the first step of pretty much any good makeup routine. Even if you don’t apply primer, putting on a good moisturizer before makeup can go a long way and make your makeup look better when it’s applied.
Specifically, there are different types of primers which can help with problem areas of your face. I personally go for a pore-filling primer to help with my skin texture: it helps makeup apply better! There are also mattifying, long-lasting, and hydrating primers out there: definitely check them out!
2. Apply Foundation Across Your Face
Â
This is for my people who like to do a medium to full face of makeup. Depending on your preference, this step is where you would either apply a tinted moisturizer or foundation.
Also depending on your coverage preference, you can layer up (or down) your foundation! At the end of the day, finding a good foundation that matches your skin tone and enhances the appearance of your skin can seriously uplevel your routine.
3. Spot Conceal
Â
After you apply your overall base face product, now it’s time for concealer! Depending on where you want to apply your concealer, I’d recommend different shade-finding methods:
- for the concealer you want to apply under your eyes, get one shade lighter than the rest of your face for a brightening effect!
- for the concealer you want to apply to the rest of your face, match the shade to your foundation for the most natural look!
PRO TIP: when applying concealer to your undereye area, only apply a small amount in three places: the inner corner of your eye, the middle part of your undereye, and the outer corner(you can create a fox eye look by doing an upward stripe on the outer corner)!
4. Contour To Balance Your Face
Â
This is the step that can actually change the appearance of your face. Depending on your facial features, you can accentuate and minimize different parts of your face. This could be your forehead, cheekbones, nose, lips, chin, and jaw line!
For my personal contour routine, I like to contour the perimeter of my forehead, my cheekbones, and my jawline! Pretty much all the contour I do is with a darker shade; however, you can technically do contour with a lighter shade than your skin tone! Light shades accentuate your features, darker shades minimize them and create depth/definition in your facial structure!
I recommend either a powder or cream contour for a more natural look; another way to achieve a good contour is making sure the shade of contour you use works with your skin’s undertones!
5. Set Your Hard Work With Powder
This step is mainly to preserve the base work we’ve done up to this point before adding more colorful makeup products. While I use a mattifying powder since I have oily skin, you can also use an ambient/blurring powder to almost airbrush your skin IRL!
6. Apply Blush Liberally
Â
I’ve said this in countless blog posts, but blush is one of my absolute favorite makeup steps. While I personally use a powder blush, cream blush and liquid blush are great choices too! However, for the most natural look, I’d recommend cream blush since it almost melts into your skin.
Blush is a great way to bring life back into your face: so when choosing a shade, choose something that doesn’t overpower your face but still is vibrant and cohesive! This can be achieved by looking at undertones and hues.
7. Use Brow Gel Or Alternative On Your Eyebrows
Â
Since we’re basically doing a full face at this point, we can’t forget about the brows. For people with really sparse brows, I’d recommend a tinted brow gel to add color and shape to your eyebrows. For those who need just a little bit of definition in their brows, a clear brow gel should be just fine.
Fun fact: whenever I’m in a rush, I just use my moisturizer as brow gel lol! 😉
8. Create An Eyeshadow Look That Compliments Your Eyes
Â
I love love love eyeshadow: it’s a great way to add some fun to your makeup look and is such a personal thing.
Personally, while I love experimenting and trying out new looks, you can never go wrong with a staple eyeshadow look. This would be my ideal one that I think would suit everyone:
- use a neutral crease color to set a base and add definition in your crease
- add glitter to the inner corner
- add a darker shade to the outer corner
- add a light glitter all over the lid!
And all these shades of eyeshadow would be more neutral leaning and cohesive with your skin tone/undertones.
9. Get Your Glow On With Highlighter
Â
Highlight, like blush, is another great way to add life back to your makeup. One thing I love is to coordinate my eyeshadow with my highlight. For a super put-together makeup look, apply your highlight to your inner corner and your cheekbones!
In terms of buying a highlighter, you can go for a powder, cream, or liquid one.
10. Apply Your Favorite Lip Products
The final step to tie a bow on this makeup tutorial. There are so many finishes in the lip product world: matte, satin, velvet, glossy, etc. At the end of the day, I recommend choosing a finish and color that you feel comfortable in and complements you!
11. Last Minute Touchup
Last, but definitely not least, to keep your makeup looking fresh throughout the day, I’d recommend keeping powder, blotting paper, and/or setting spray on you. We love getting the full extent out of our makeup 😉
