Skincare Tips For Sensitive Skin:
1. Purchase Clean Skincare
In the past couple of years, the hype around “clean skincare” has become a lot.
But what even is clean skincare?
Clean skincare consists of products that are made without harmful ingredients like synthetics and toxins, and they also are extremely transparent about what they include in their formulas.
Sensitive skin can be extremely irritated by harsh ingredients, and synthetics/toxins fall under that category. Thankfully, many brands now are catching up with the times and creating safe products for all skin types, especially sensitive ones.
Regardless, always look at ingredient lists to really see what’s in your favorite products, and be aware of red flags like parabens and fragrance (more on this later)! And if you’re not sure if a skincare ingredient is good or not, remember, Google is your best friend!
2. Patch Test EVERYTHING
And I mean everything. While this can be an overkill, if you have extremely sensitive skin, patch testing is a great way of dipping your toe in the water and making sure your skin can handle your new product.
For starters, I’d recommend patch testing on your elbow! Take a small amount of the product and apply it to your skin, then wait 1-2 days for a reaction. If one doesn’t pop up, you should be good to go!
Regardless, I still recommend gradually easing a product into your routine to make sure it works well with other products in your routine!
3. Don’t Use Skincare With Fragrance In It
THIS IS A MUST!! Fragrance is an unnecessary addition to a skincare product and is often used to cover up nasty smells coming from ingredients that have no place in your skincare favorites!
Fragrance is proven to be bad for sensitive skin because it contains chemicals that can irritate your skin. So, even though that watermelon smell your glow serum has gives you the ultimate summer vibes, the irritating reaction that could follow after using it isn’t worth it!
To be safe with your routine, stick to products without fragrance!
4. Less Is More When It Comes To A Routine
This applies to not just the amount of skincare products in your routine but also their formulation. The more ingredients in a skincare product, the higher chance one of them could irritate your skin. Or even the more skincare products in routine allows for a higher chance of clashing and your skin barrier being broken!
That’s why I would keep your skincare routine to the necessities that you feel you need for your skin to feel its best! A cleansing system, a product for your skin issue, and moisturizer usually does the trick for your nighttime routine.
5. Always Wear SPF
This tip is so so important, especially if you’re using an exfoliator and have sensitive skin. Use of exfoliating products can make your skin more sensitive to UV rays, causing more sun damage and possible irritation. SPF can help remedy this, especially for people with sensitive skin! As always, be sure to apply enough to cover your entire face and neck, as well as reapplying every 2-3 hours!
I have a post on sunscreen and the type you need to be buying which you should check out!
6. Buy Products With Calming Ingredients
If your skin gets irritated easily, using products with calming ingredients such as green tea, aloe, and shea butter can be really helpful!
These products help reduce inflammation and moisturize your skin so it looks supple and healthy! They can be found in products like cleansers, toners, and moisturizers.
If you want some exfoliation that also soothes your skin:
7. Make Sure Your Skin Is Properly Moisturized
This tip is important for everyone, regardless of whether or not you have sensitive skin. Depending on your skin type, the moisturizer you need varies. If you have drier skin, then a heavier and richer moisturizer will be able to quench your dry skin. However, if you have oily skin (you still need to moisturize by the way), a gel moisturizer could be perfect for hydrating your skin without being overbearing. No matter what, moisturizer is a staple part of a good skincare routine and one that can make or break the skincare game!
A moisturizer that can work for everyone, especially if you have acne:
At the end of the day, I would give these skincare tips to people with all skin types, but they especially apply to people with sensitive skin. So, if that’s you, I hope you found this post helpful!
The main thing I would tell you to remember is that a minimalist approach often works best, especially with your skincare routine and the formulation of your skincare products. Trust me, it makes all the difference!
