How can being kind improve your mental health?
Let’s get into it.
Being kind can come in many forms: community service, volunteer work, or simply holding a door open for someone. Actions of kindness invoke feelings of empathy, compassion, warmth, and gratitude. These feelings are obviously good ones, and with prolonged exposure can have significant impact on your overall mental state.
Being kind to others less fortunate can make you realize the simple blessings of life!
How to Involve Kindness in Your Life
I truly believe that everyone has good in them, so by actively going out of your way to amplify that part of yourselves, you can improve your mental health!
Starting off with the simple ways:
- holding the door open for someone
- smiling(a smile can make someone’s day a whole lot better: I know from experience)
- complimenting a random stranger you find yourself next to
- helping someone with something like lifting boxes or groceries
Now let’s talk about some bigger ways to be kind:
- donating(only if you’re in the position to do so): there are many charitable organizations out there that could you use your support
- volunteer work: not all support is monetary(soup kitchens, homeless centers, etc.)
- local initiatives: oftentimes, the best place to start is in your own community(check out what volunteer opportunities are in your areas)
- writing cards to children in hospitals: I recently did this, and lemme tell you, helping out a little kid is a noble way to give back!
- joining a charitable organization: Student Council, Key Club, or other clubs!(good for students)
- starting your own initiative: I know some people who’ve actually started their own non profits to address problems they’re passionate about in their community
The Gist of It
So, basically what I’m trying to tell you is this: being kind can improve your mental health by provoking feelings of compassion and empathy(which will make you feel better about your potential and give you a purpose), and there are so many ways to bring kindness into your life!
You just have to take the first step!
