What is DIY skincare?
If you don’t know what DIY skincare is(which, basically everyone does), it’s do it yourself skincare. Like how we have DIY slime and DIY clothing, DIY skincare has been a fad for quite some time now.
This could mean taking things in your fridge and making a face mask, or it could also mean using raw ingredients to treat your skin’s concerns.
Why is it bad for you?
Now, while making your own slime and clothing might not be detrimental, DIY skincare is definitely detrimental.
I mean, you’re basically taking raw ingredients that have been sitting in your fridge for god knows how long and putting it on your face to treat your skin.
Doesn’t sound that great now.
Let me sum up why DIY skincare is bad for you in just 3 reasons.
1. It can harm you.
Scary, right?
If you take raw, unfiltered ingredients from your fridge(which might not be the sanitary place to store skincare ingredients), it could really damage the epidermal layer of your skin.
For example, citrus(AKA lemon). Many people use citrus fruits in their DIY skincare as a brightening agent.
But, citrus is actually an acid which is NOT good for you and also has astringent properties, which can cause increased sensitivity to the Sun and chemical burns.
2. It’s not effective.
You might think that by taking large amounts of unfiltered ingredients, you’re getting extra benefits.
But, it’s actually the opposite.
Too much of anything is bad for you, and DIY skincare is no longer a solution to ineffective skincare. For example, take the ingredient coconut. While many people put coconut on their face, it actually has comedogenic properties.
If you don’t know what that is(at first, I didn’t either), it basically means it can clog your pores.
So, especially for people with acne thinking they can get rid of it with coconut oil, it actually makes your acne worse by clogging your pores and creating even more breakouts.
3. There are better alternatives.
Trust me, there are. Back in the olden days, I understand that good and affordable skincare was hard to come by.
But, now brands are taking note of what consumers want, and I think DIY skincare is going to die off very soon because of it.
What should you use instead?
As I said in the previous section, there are many great and affordable alternatives to DIY skincare! In our last blog post, I went over my top skincare recommendations for the fall season that I think you would TOTALLY love!
